News and Personal Thoughts:
Baltimore’s own Michael Phelps now holds the records for the most medals in Olympic history.
Ravens:
Dennis Pitta to miss all preseason with hand injury… McKinnie finally shows at practice after racking up $90,000 in fines under the new collective bargaining agreement. He did not report due to a back injury, and did not practice after reporting… Flacco’s agent has been pushing for a contract extension before the season starts, and, according to one analyst could be close to a deal that might be in the neighborhood of 6 years/$100M… Lewis reported to camp lighter than ever before. Ray apparently is acknowledging that he can’t be as physical as he once was, and is focusing on speed to compensate… Reed has been bucking for a new contract too, but he is lower on the priority list, and could test the free agent market next off season… [BleacherReport] What the Ravens must do to repeat: Reestablish the Defense, and spread the offense around more so other’s can’t shut us down by shutting down rice, and make special teams more than “special ed.”
Orioles:
Orioles keep showing flashes of greatness, mixed in with shades of the past. It is unusual to be talking about the playoffs going in to August, but here we are. Despite a slump that has more or less lasted since mid June, the O’s are 6½ games out of first and 2½ games out of a wild card spot. Unfortunately, the roster has more duct tape and shoe strings holding it together than is wise. With only 10 games remaining (out of 60) against teams not in the playoff hunt, the O’s would truly be deserving of a playoff spot, should the make it. I expect that they won’t be able to hold up to the standards they set at the start of the season, and should count their blessings if they can finish above .500 for the first time in, like, forever (so it seems). Advisedly, they made no rash moves at the trade deadline, which would only damage rebuilding efforts by robbing the farm system of key future players.
Alouettes
The Als (2-3) lost to Toronto on Friday 23-20, and are now in 3rd, 1 game behind Hamilton and Toronto. Next week, the Als travel to Winnipeg (1-4), the only team in the league with a worse record, for a Friday night game.
Blast:
Nothing to report.
Chesapeake Bayhawks: (Home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium)
Despite losing to Boston (7-5) on Saturday bu a 16-13 score, the Hawks (9-3, tied for first with Denver) have clinched a playoff spot with 2 regular season games left. Saturday, they host Long Island (8-4, 3rd place).
Charm:
Nothing to report.
Capitals (See website for more details):
Nothing to report.
Wizards (See website for more details):
2012-2013 schedule has been released.
Mystics (See website for more details):
Mystics (4-14) broke a 4 game losing streak on Friday with a 70-53 win over New York. Washington is in last place in the conference, and only Phoenix (4-15) and Tulsa (3-15) sport a worse record.
D.C.United (See website for more details):
DC tied Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in a Friendly match. In league play, they have lost 2 in a row, 3 of 4, and 4 of the last 6, dropping them to 10-7-3, and into 4th place, 5 points behind first place New York. Next game is Saturday against Columbus (6th place in Eastern Conference, 8-7-4)
What do you want to see in the Ravens report? What should be scrapped? Actually, never mind. No one is reading this anyway so you probably won’t know the difference. Send an email to iggy at tealdragon.net. Thanks!
