Iggy’s Baltimore Sportgs Report – August 11, 2013

Ravens:
Are you ready for some football? Ravens start preseason with a somewhat dominant win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game held a lot of positives for the upcoming season, but how much can you really tell from a preseason game, after all? Questions included tight ends and wide receivers. Shiancoe did well, but depth will be the bigger question at TE with injuries sidelining Pitta and Dickson. Also of note is that no one emerged as the number 2 threat at WR. Responding to this concern, the Ravens signed Brandon Stokely to a one-year deal. At 37, I hope he can stay healthy and provide the distractions needed for our offensive strike force. Bernard Pierce, who was often better than Ray Rice last year when he took advantage of other teams slacking off when he came in the game, took a scary hit on his touchdown run, but only suffered a sprained knee. Despite winning the Super Bowl, Ravens camp is still far from the Billick Cream Puff Camp, as Harbaugh has been riding players to push themselves to the next level.

Orioles:
Orioles continue to struggle through inconsistency, as Jim Johnson remains the MLB leader in Saves… and Blown Saves. Think of how much better off we would be without those 7 Blown Saves — Yeah, you got it… first place.

If the Playoffs started today…
Rank American National
1 Boston Atlanta
2 Detroit Pittsburgh
3 Texas Los Angeles
WC1 Tampa Bay St. Louis
WC2 Oakland Cincinnati

Alouettes
The Als (2-4, tied for 2nd) fell behind 32-3, before scoring some mercy points in a 38-13 route handed to them by first place Toronto (4-2) on Thursday. Next game is at Saskatchewan (5-1, tied for 1st in West) on Saturday.

Blast:
(Nothing new to report) The MISL as added another new Franchise, this time to Reading, Pennsylvania. They will be called the Pennsylvania Roar and will participate in the 2013-4 season.

Chesapeake Bayhawks: (Home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium)
The Bayhawks (9-5) came from behind to defeat Charlotte (7-7) 16-14 and clinch 2nd place for the tournament, which will be played in two weeks in Chester, Pennsylvania. Denver (14-0) took first, Hamilton lost out on the tie breaker with the Bayhawks for 3rd place, and Charlotte stayed in 4th after the loss to the Bayhawks. The 4 team tournament will begin on Saturday, August 24th, with the championship game on Sunday, August 25th.

Charm:
If I read the schedule correctly, it looks like the Charm (3-1) clinched a first round bye, and will how the winner Atlanta/Philadelphia (both 2-1-1) on Saturday, August 24 at 7PM. In the West, LA (2-1) is at Chicago (3-1), playing for the right to face Seattle (4-0).

Capitals (See website for more details):
Tickets now on sale.

Wizards (See website for more details):
Tickets now on sale.

Mystics (See website for more details):
Mystics broke their 4 game losing streak, and are on their way to making it 2 in a row this afternoon, but still remain in 4th place.

D.C.United (See website for more details):
DC’s 2 game win streak was snapped by Philadelphia last night.

What do you want to see in the Ravens report? What should be scrapped? Actually, never mind. No one is reading this anyway so you probably won’t know the difference. Send an email to iggy at tealdragon.net. Thanks!
