Ravens Roost Members Interviewed in The Baltimore Sun

Daniel “Dano” Harth & Steve “Zeke” Zelkosk watched this past week’s game at Champs in Columbia.  The Baltimore Sun was on hand doing interviews, and they were picked to be included.

Ravens’ season ticket holder Daniel Harth was still on a high from the Ravens’ shocking 38-35 win over theDenver Broncos on Jan. 12.

“That was one of the greatest game Iâ€ve ever seen,” said Harth of Columbia. “This game was special too. All of the elements were there with Ray Lewis retiring and getting revenge. This was a lot of fun.”

The stage is now set for Ravens coach John Harbaugh to meet little brother Jim, coach of the NFC championSan Francisco 49ers, in the Super Bowl on Feb. 3. Steve Zelkoski, of Ravens Roost #4 in Ellicott City, is heading down to New Orleans for the big game.

“My dad is 74 years old and we’ve been to every single (home) game together,” Zelkoski said. “All he wanted to do was go to the Super Bowl, so I just called him and told him that we’re going.

“Ravens Roost #4 is a great organization. We do a lot of charity work and those guys are all fired up to go down. We’re going to represent the Ravens well in New Orleans.”

In Another article Geoff Lakis,  Jeff “Frosty” Volmer, Bill and Theresa Griffin were interviewed:

When the NFL season began in September, Ellicott City resident and die-hard Baltimore Ravens fan Geoff Lakis didn’t expect that six months later his beloved team would be playing in Super BowlXVLII.

“Did I think they could possibly get there, yes, but I never had the thought, ‘Oh, we are going to the Super Bowl,'” said Lakis, who, along with his wife Amy, will be flying to New Orleans for the Feb. 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers. “If I did, I would’ve made my reservations a long time ago and saved a lot of money.”

Lakis, a season-ticket holder and member of Ravens Roost No. 4 in Ellicott City, found out Monday, Jan. 21 that he was a winner in the Ravens’ lottery, allowing him to purchase two tickets at face value — $850 each.

“We basically had no thoughts of going to the game until we won the lottery,” said Lakis, 52. “We figured it was a once in a lifetime deal. … so, we decided to buy the tickets and try to piece it together from there.”

While other local fans make plans to travel to New Orleans, many more are conspiring to bring a bit of the Super Bowl to Howard County.

From a county government-sponsored breakfast giveaway, to printing Super Bowl T-shirts, to buildings draped in purple light, it looks as if there will be enough Ravens fever in Howard County to turn even the most enthusiastic fan purple in the face.

Leading up to the game, County Executive Ken Ulman is giving away the “Ultimate Ravens Breakfast,” complete with menu items like T-sizzle sausage and eggs, Brendan Ayanba-bagels, Michael Eggs Over Easy, and a Box o’ Morning Joe Flacco, to the school, office or organization with the most Ravens’ pride.

While there is plenty of competition for the best place to go in Howard County for the big game, you would be hard-pressed to argue against Jilly’s Bar and Grill in Ellicott City, the official home to Ravens Roost No. 4.

According to Ravens Roost President Jeff Volmer, about one-third of the 130-member roost spends away games at Jilly’s, making up just a portion of the normally raucous crowd.

For the AFC Championship game on Jan. 20, Volmer arrived six hours before kickoff to ensure he got a front row seat.

“It was standing room only,” said Volmer, 51, of Columbia. “Everyone was rambunctious and excited before the game. It was a really good crowd.”

Among the attendees were Ravens Roost members Bill and Theresa Griffin, who, along with the Lakis’, will be representing their local contingent in the Big Easy.

“I can’t believe it, I’m flying high,” said Theresa, whose tickets are on the 50-yard-line. “I’m a huge Ray Lewis fan, so to have this opportunity to see him play one more time is unbelievable.”

Theresa said that at first, she and her husband didn’t believe they had won..

“We went to check our email to see if we won the lottery, and my husband read it wrong and said we didn’t win,” said Theresa, who was looking over her husband’s shoulder at the computer screen. “Then we were nervous it was a scam, but sure enough we won.”

Theresa and her husband immediately purchased two tickets as well as two promotion packages, which include tickets to a Ravens’ tailgate party and other special events.

The cost of the trip will run approximately $8,000 — money Theresa said is well spent.

“I’d rather go with the package and be able to do anything,” said Theresa, a resident of Easton.

While you won’t see the Lakis’ or the Griffins at Jilly’s on Feb. 3, you’ll most likely find fellow roost member Chuck Anderson, of Ellicott City.

Anderson was one of the thousands of Ravens’ fans who made the trip to Foxboro, Mass., for the AFC Championship game Jan. 20 against the New England Patriots.

“It was amazing to experience Baltimore winning in an AFC championship like that,” said Anderson, who made the trip with a few colleagues from the Howard County Public School System.

While Anderson, a season-ticket holder, explored taking a trip to New Orleans, he ultimately decided to stay close to home for the game.

“We thought about it, but we’ll be at the local watering hole supporting the Ravens 100 percent,” Anderson said.

While fans still were celebrating the 28-13 victory over the Patriots on Monday, Jan. 21, Nightmare Graphics, in Columbia, was busy making T-shirts.

For the Super Bowl, the company is printing the words “Festivus Maximus” across the front, a tribute to a phrase coined by former head coach Brian Billick before the Ravens beat the Giants in the 2001 Super Bowl. It also says “Ray’s Last Ride.”

Sam Andelman, President of Nightmare Graphics, said he and his crews have been printing new shirts since the first playoff victory against the Indianapolis Colts.

“I think you’ll see us back here two weeks from today printing shirts again,” Andelman said.

Iggy’s Ravens Report – January 23, 2012

News & Commentary

Ravens:
Unbelievable… Again! The Ravens are going to the Super Bowl. Let me say that again: The BALTIMORE RAVENS are going to the SUPER BOWL! We exorcised the ghost of Bob Irsay. Then we conquered the man, myth, and legend known as Peyton Manning (and the A-hole GM John Elway >*spit*<), and now, we defeated our own failures of years past. We earned this trip. We pulled ourselves together at the perfect time: the playoffs. By how, after 16 games, did we rise above the inconsistency that has plagued us for, oh…um… 5 years? There are many answers to that question. First, it is Caldwell. Jettisoning Cam Cameron was a long time coming. Caldwell understands quarterbacks. He understands Flacco. He understands how to use the weapons we have and build a plan around it. Next is getting healthy at the right time. Our "starting" defense didn't take the field at the same time until the playoffs, and now it shows what we can do. Thirdly, it is Bryant McKinnie. We renegotiated his contract to start the season with a bonus for snap counts and then benched him until the playoffs. He was the missing piece of the offensive line that has given Joe the time pick his receivers, and not settle for one in a panic. These are a few of the many factors that have come together at the right time, and given us a chance to become legendary, once again.

Well, now that we are here, can we finish what we started? Can we send Ray Lewis out with the biggest bang possible in this league? The answer is simple. YES WE CAN. But we need to find new motivation. There is no Irsay, Elway, Manning, Lee Evans, or Billy Cundiff to overcome now. If anyone, it is the San Francisco 49ers who have a chip on their shoulders. They lost the only previous meeting of two brotherly Head Coaches in NFL history 16-6 on Thanksgiving night just over a year ago. They have a very passionate head coach, and a 2nd year quarterback who continues to find ways to win. In our corner, is the winningest quarterback in the NFL over the last 5 years, an emotional Ray Lewis, and a 4+ point “underdog” rating to stoke our fire. We have experience, and are the only underdog team to have won this post season, and we’ve done it twice thus far. So, can we do it? We have the heart and we know what it takes. No it is only a matter of execution. Just take a few extra minutes in practice on special teams, please, or I’ll have to talk about another type of execution.

Iggy’s Ravens Report – January 14, 2013

Ravens:
Unbelievable! That’s the only word I can come up with. In the 4th longest game in NFL history, the Ravens enter the come 9+ points underdogs and beat the top seeded Broncos on their home frozen turf. In a game that the Broncos literally gave away by failing to take this game and the Ravens seriously, Flacco hit 3 homeruns, and Corey Graham picked off 2 Peyton Manning passes that are sure to give him nightmares for months to come. The 2nd rates Broncos defense dared Flacco to beat them on deep balls, and he did. With time outs left and Manning as their QB, the Broncos twice let the clock expire instead of trying to drive for points. Finally, in something that should NEVER happen, Jacoby Jones got behind the corners AND the safeties for a 70 yard touchdown with less then a minute left. How do you obtain a #1 seed, and make those kind of mistakes and errors? Simple: You didn’t take your opponent seriously. After all, you just pounded their rotting dead body in to their own home turf a month earlier. The path was paved, but they walked on the grass: The frozen grass.

Now, after excising the demons of Irsay and Elway, the Ravens find themselves 9+ points underdogs again, this time to nemesis New England, where we have to go deep into our souls to remove our own demons from last year: Lee Evans and Billy Cundiff. Their memory, and it will be brought up every day for the next week, is what stands in the way of our destiny. What will it be Ravens? You are where I never thought you would be all season long. Prove me wrong again and take us to the show!

PS – Who says Suggs is a gimp (2 sacks), and Ray Lewis (17 tackles) is washed up and should have retired well before this year? Keep calling them that, and you will find yourself gimpy and washed up… and, so help me, if Dan Dierdork is broadcasting the AFC Championship game… … … I better not finish that thought.

Ravens Head to the AFC Championship for the Second Straight Year

The Baltimore Ravens advanced to the AFC Championship for the second straight year. Raven’s Roost #4 was at Jilly’s in Ellicott City, MD  for the celebration.  Check out this video of Cindy leading the roost with a cheer:

Ravens Divisional Playoff Party – Saturday, January 12th

Join our Roost #4 members and friends up at Jilly’s on Saturday, January 12th, for Divisional Playoff action as the Ravens travel to the Mile High City to battle Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.  Game time is 4:30pm … but be at Jilly’s early to get a seat!  Ravens rose to the occasion last week against Indy and defeated the Colts at M&T Bank Stadium 24-9 as Ray Lewis made his final lap around the stadium.  Can the Ravens echo the same intensity on the road and overcome their archnemesis Peyton?  C’mon up to Jilly’s and watch with the whole gang!

Roost #4 will run the usual 50/50 raffle and also throw-in a block pool for the game … both benefit Special Olympics Maryland and the Deep Creek Dunk.  As usual, the Skeeter will be leading the “R-A-V-E-N-S RAVENS” cheer!

Go Ravens!!!
