Iggy’s Baltimore Sports Report – June 18, 2014

Ravens:
WR Steve Smith and CB Lardarius Webb have a flare up at mini-camp, but should be worked out within the team… Of larger note is that the Redskins trademark has been revoked. They are still protected during the appeals process, but it is expected that a name change may be forthcoming to avoid a length court battle. Although they will probably play this season as is, one theory suggests that they will drop the appeal after the season, and unveil plans for a new name, Washington Warriors, using the same logo and colors. Dan Snyder had the name already trademarked for an arena football league team, for a now defunct league. Stay tuned, as we will have to work hard at coming up with new, derogatory names for the team.

Orioles:
O’s still playing .500 ball, but what has changed is the fact that they have been getting the pitching they need, but not the hitting. Something needs to be done to boost Machado and Davis out of their season long slumps, return JJ Hardy’s power, and fill the void at 2B and C with someone who can hit the ball out of the infield. I really want to see Pearce get more playing time, and that has started to happen with his average still over .300, after passing the 100 AB mark… Orioles are bidding for the 2016 All-Star game, and have a decent shot at getting it.

Alouettes
Als lose pre-season opener 28-23 to Hamilton. They will host Ottawa on Friday for preseason week 2.

Mariners
Mariner’s (6-2) defeated Cape Fear 45-44 to hoist their 2nd league championships, much to the dismay of league officials who already disbanded the team after their undefeated 2010 campaign, and have won the title again in their first year back in the league, a midst financial problems that forced 1 forfeit, and one game cancellation at the end of the season. Teams future is once again murky.

Blast:
Nothing new to report.

Chesapeake Bayhawks: (Home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium)
The Bayhawks (2-5) finally got back in the win column, 16-15 (OT) over Boston, but still sit at the bottom of the standings. Next game is at first place Denver (6-1) on Saturday.

Charm:
Charm (0-1) lost season opener to the Jacksonville Breeze 27-12. Next game is June 21 at Toledo.

Capitals (See website for more details):
Nothing to report.

Wizards (See website for more details):
Nothing to report.

Mystics (See website for more details):
Mystics are 5-7 and in 5th place (of 6 teams)

D.C.United (See website for more details):
United (7-4-4) lost to Rochester on Tuesday in a US Open cup matchup, 1-0. Next League game is June 28 against Seattle.

What do you want to see in the Ravens report? What should be scrapped? Actually, never mind. No one is reading this anyway so you probably won’t know the difference. Send an email to iggy at tealdragon.net. Thanks!
