Iggy’s Ravens Report – October 9, 2012

News & Commentary

News and Personal Thoughts:
Let’s Go O’s!

Ravens:
Ravens showed signs of 2000 with an inept offense and a defense that came up with the big plays when they needed it. Bad news is that this is NOT 2000, and offense is supposed to be lighting up the board. Thanks to a worse day by KC, the Ravens escaped with a win in what has been our sloppiest game yet this year. At least 5 dropped passes, and various other penalties and miscues spelled sure disaster if the Chefs had been carrying a worse curse. Rookie Justin Tucker was the savior, in Matt Stover still, delivering when called upon. Next up is Dallas, who has one of the top rated overall defenses in the NFL. If the Offense can’t find a way to click on Sunday, it will be a long afternoon.

Orioles:
Unbelievable! First, beating Texas in Texas when they have had our number all season. Then, the almost unprecedented (there was that game against Oakland in late July where he gave up 6 runs), melt down of Jim Johnson that took what could have been a prolonged extra inning affair on Sunday, followed by the 9th inning dominance in Game 2 on Monday night. The Orioles still have some magic left in them, but need to put a major beat down on the yanks in Game 3 in New York, where the O’s have posted a 6-3 record thus far this season. Another 2 out of 3 will suite me just fine!

Alouettes
The Als (8-6) fell to last place Winnipeg (4-10) on Monday, 27-22, but maintained a 1 game division lead will Toronto getting spanked by Saskatchewan 36-10. Montreal travels to Toronto (7-7) for a Sunday game this week.

Blast:
2012-13 Schedule has been posted. The Blast have also announced that they will partner with the family of Daniel Borowy, 17 year old victim of shooting at Perry Hall High, to create the “Goals for Daniel” program, to help the family defray the medical costs after he has undergone 3 surgeries.

Chesapeake Bayhawks: (Home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium)
Nothing to Report.

Charm:
(No change in status from last weeks report, but repeated in case you missed it) The Lingerie Football League announced that they are cancelling their 2012 season. The reason for the change is that the league plans on changing from a fall league to a spring and summer league in the 2012-13 season. The League stated that they have plans to expand during the hiatus and continue to look for athletes, or talent, or (insert your own word) here to fill the new teams they have planned. The planned expansion includes having separate league based in Canada and launching a version of LFL Australia. The League also announced that they will hold promotional tours in Mexico, Australia, and Asia during the hiatus in an effort to expand their brand globally. They have planned an “All-Fantasy Game” or All-Star Game for Brisbane. The Toronto Triumph have moved from the LFL’s American Division to be part of the new all-Canadian league which be known as LFL Canada. This league will play their games starting in the fall of 2012. The league will feature four teams, the aforementioned Triumph, the B.C. Angels based in Vancouver, along with the Regina Rage, and Saskatoon Sirens who will be sure to be bitter hair-pulling rivals on the field. The League is also planning LFL Europe league to launch in 2014. Cities have yet to be announced. The League also announced that it hopes to have its 4 champions (USA, Canada, Europe, Australia) meet in a tournament every four years to determine an LFL World Champion

Capitals (See website for more details):
Locked out.

Wizards (See website for more details):
Nothing to report.

Mystics (See website for more details):

D.C.United (See website for more details):
United (16-10-6) defeated Toronto (5-20-7) to move ahead of New York and into 3rd place with 2 regular season games remaining. DC will clinch a playoff spot with a win or tie, or Houston win or tie. Next game is October 20 at Columbus (14-11-7, 6th place), who is fighting to move back into the last playoff spot.

What do you want to see in the Ravens report? What should be scrapped? Actually, never mind. No one is reading this anyway so you probably won’t know the difference. Send an email to iggy at tealdragon.net. Thanks!

Iggy’s Predictions

  • Week 5
    • Arizona over Rams (+1.5). Rams came to play!
    • Ravens over Chiefs (+4.5), but take the points. Confidence in D keeps going down. Ravens need to figure out this chemistry thing soon.
    • steelers over Eagles (+3.5), but take the points. Vick seems to keep the games close; steelers have some key D players back. Philly Vicktim to their our problems.
    • Packers over Colts (+7.5). Mismatch. Apparently not!
    • Giants over Browns (+9.5), but take the points. Browns could be good, with a few quality receivers. Browns looked poised for an upset, and then choked.
    • Falcons over skins (+3.5), but take the points. Atlanta is best in the NFC, but RG3 and Cundiff could make it interesting. Falcons win by a TD, not FG.
    • Bengals over Fins (+3.5), but take the points. Miami is better than their record indicates. Fins give Ravens some breathing room in the standings
    • Seattle (2.5) over Carolina. Two teams going somewhere, but nobody knows where yet. Hawks win by 4
    • Bears over Jax (+5.5). Jags may have a win, but might be worst in the league. Bears ate the Jags. No evidence remained.
    • Pats over Denver (+6.5). Brady has a better cast of characters around him than Peyton. 10 points better, in fact!
    • Niners over Bills (+9.5). Bills have improved a lot, but SF might have the scariest D package in the league. 45-3! Is that scary enough?
    • Vikings over Tennessee (+5.5). Locker is out; Hasslebeck starting for Titans. Are Vikings better than expected? Start believing in this purple!
    • Chargers (+3.5) over Saints. Saints could get their first win, but the numbers point the other way. Should have gone with gut instead of the numbers.
    • Houston over Jets (+7.5). Could the Hot Dog and the Holy Roller get blanked for 2nd straight week? Houston wins, but fails to cover.
    • This Week:: 10-4 Straight Up, and 8-6 Against the Spread
    • Season:: 49-28 Straight Up, and 45-32 Against the Spread
  • Week 6
    • stealers over Titans (+5.5).As much as I would like to see the Titans pull an upset, stealers are in better shape, even with their injuries.
    • Baltimore over Dallas (+3.5), but take the points.Upset Warning! Dallas has 4th ranked Defense.
    • Tampa over KC (+3.5), but take the points.KC can move the ball, just not hold on to it.
    • Indy (+3.5) over Jets.Colts to get lucky again.
    • Cleveland (+2.5) over Cincinnati.Browns are real close to finally winning a game, and this could be the week.
    • Philly over Detroit (+4.5), but take the points.Philly has yet to cover a spread.
    • Atlanta over Oakland (+8.5).Blowout of the week prediction.
    • Rams (+3.5) over Miami. After big win against Cincy, Fins are poised for a let down against a well rested Rams team.
    • Cards over Buffalo (+4.5).Buffalo is still seeing 49er birdies flying around their head as they line up for 2nd straight game in the West.
    • Pats over Seattle (+3.5).Struggled with this pick since Seattle has #1 ranked defense. But then I looked at offense where Seattle ranks 27th
    • Niners over Giants (+5.5), but take the points.Niners finally get a decent opponent in NFC title game rematch.
    • Vikings (+1.5) over skins.RG3 is not all that, and the surprising Vikes will win this one as Cundiff misses another kick.
    • Houston over Green Bay (+3.5).Packers falling apart, and Houston is the best in the AFC.
    • Chargers over Denver (+2.5). Should be an exciting Monday night game!
  • MLB
    • Wild Card Round (0-2)
      • Rangers over Orioles. They’ve had our number all season. Glad to be wrong!
      • Braves over Cards. Cards are lucky to have just made the show. Looks like the Infield Fly Rule extends to the outfield as well.
    • Divisional Round
      • Orioles over Yankees in 5. Being the underdog in this series is actually a plus for the O’s who are 6-3 in NY this season, and hold the AL’s best road record. Series tied at 1
      • A’s over Detroit in 4. Can anyone stop the red hot A’s? Detroit his giving their best effort, up 2-0, but now back to Oakland
      • washington over Cards in 4. Cards shouldn’t be here. Back to Washington, tied at 1
      • Reds over Giants in 4. Reds are the team to beat this year, I think. Giants are on death’s door, down 2-0
